The first time I have ever heard about Connor Franta was when I watched a Vlog of a german Youtuber while he vlogged his trip to L.A. Connor casually appeared behind him and just took a picture with him.
Later I found Connor’s channel on Youtube after watching some videos of the O2L boys. He was so funny, entertaining, sweet and kind. His videos are an inspiration for many people out there. I do not know him personally but I have read his book about five times because every time I feel sad, embarrassed, alone or in someway lost his words will soothe me.

I wonder how long it took him to see his life in this way and how long it will take me to feel the same way about it. This book is all about his story, his childhood, school times, the tough times he went through, his memories and everything he experienced until he decided to write them down (2015). A memoir powerful because of the little details, because of his way to share his thoughts with the world.
I know the way he is talking to his audience in his videos and you can see the exact same person writing this book because of his little parenthetical comments he added from time to time:

This book is a must have for everyone who likes to think about life in many different ways. For those who think about all those little daily things and the details of each day you live. A memoir utterly honest, inspiring and modest at the same time. It is his work and I do not own anything. I have been an on-again, off-again subscriber to Connor for a year or so. He seems a nice guy but his content is only occasionally to my taste.

I came to this book with similar thoughts, thoughts that it could be ok but probably wouldn’t be for me. I since heard people raving about it and I became intrigued. I was tempted to buy on several occasions but couldn’t actually bring myself to. Then came along the June #LGBTReadathon and I was looking for a third physical book, so in light of Connor’s recent coming out, I finally felt I had reason enough to pick it up and read it.
Yesterday was the first day of the readathon and conveniently I had a long train journey to pass time on so I started with Connor’s book. By the time I finished the journey, I had finished the book. Yes, it’s a relatively short book with lots of pages taken up with photographs (stunning photographs might I add!), but that has got to be the fastest I’ve whizzed through a book in my life!
A Work In Progress is, if you are a fan of Connor, perhaps exactly what you might expect from him, a perfect extension of his YouTube channel. You can hear his voice and idiosyncrasies coming through on the page. Connor describes the book as a memoir. However, I would describe it more as a book of life lessons, albeit passed on to teens and young adults in an anecdotal way.

In conclusion, if you are a fan of Connor Franta, this book has been out over two months, why haven’t you read it yet?! If you aren’t a fan generally but are thinking about picking it up, do! This is where I was with it and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
